After years of owning Komondors and admiring other livestock guardian breeds, we were excited to welcome Zora to Sand Meadow Farm. Zora is our first Tornjak, and she has quickly become a beloved member of the family. She is beautiful, thoughtful, affectionate, and already shows many of the qualities that drew us to the breed: steadiness, watchfulness, confidence, and a deep bond with her people.

Zora is growing up as a true farm dog. She is calm and observant around the horses, sensible in the barn, and very devoted to her family. Like many guardian breeds, she is affectionate with those she knows while still being naturally aware of what is happening around her. She has a sweet, silly side too, and she keeps us laughing with her expressive face, mischievous smarts, and big personality.

We are still learning with Zora as she matures, but we are very pleased with her character. She has the gentle, steady presence we hoped for, along with the intelligence and independence expected in a livestock guardian breed. As a young puppy, she easily obtained her Canine Good Citizen and Trick Dog titles, and we are sure there is more to come for her. She is a wonderful fit for our farm and family.

Zora is registered with the AKC Foundation Stock Service. As she matures, we look forward to continuing her training and watching her develop into the beautiful, steady, and loyal Tornjak she is becoming.

The Tornjak

The Tornjak is an old and rare livestock guardian breed from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. For centuries, dogs of this type lived and worked with shepherds, protecting flocks in mountainous regions where strength, endurance, courage, and good judgment were essential. The breed developed as a practical working dog: powerful enough to deter predators, but steady and sensible enough to live closely with people and livestock.

Tornjaks are large, strong, and athletic dogs with substantial bone, a weather-resistant coat, and a calm, watchful presence. They are not herding dogs in the way an Icelandic Sheepdog is a herding dog. Instead, they are livestock guardians. Their job is not to move animals from place to place, but to live with and protect their people, property, and animals.

A good Tornjak should be confident, stable, loyal, and thoughtful. They are usually devoted and affectionate with their families, but they are naturally observant and may be reserved with strangers. They tend to think before they act, which is one of the traits that makes them such appealing guardian dogs. They should not be nervous or reactive, but they also should not be expected to greet every stranger like a retriever.

Because Tornjaks are intelligent and independent, they do best with owners who understand large guardian breeds. They need early socialization, fair and consistent training, good boundaries, and time to mature. They are not typically push-button obedience dogs, but they are very capable learners when treated with patience and respect.

The Tornjak coat is thick and weather resistant, helping protect the dog from cold, wet, and harsh conditions. Regular brushing is important, especially during seasonal shedding. A high-velocity blower works even better. Despite their size and coat, Tornjaks are often quite moderate and sensible in the house when their needs are met.

This is a special breed, but not a breed for everyone. Tornjaks are best suited to people who appreciate a large, loyal, watchful, and independent guardian. In the right home, they are extraordinary companions: steady, devoted, protective, and deeply bonded to their family.
